Your Compliance Assessment

Smart Invoice Compliance in 2026

Mandatory Since Jan 2025

All VAT-registered businesses must issue invoices through ZRA-accredited Smart Invoice systems. Non-compliant invoices are invalid for input VAT claims.

Protects Your Customers

When you issue Smart Invoices, your customers can deduct input VAT on their purchases from you. Without it, they lose that deduction — and may find another supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ZRA Smart Invoice?

Smart Invoice is ZRA's electronic invoicing system that requires all VAT-registered businesses in Zambia to issue invoices through accredited fiscal devices or software. Each invoice carries a unique ZRA fiscal code that validates it for tax purposes.

Who must comply with Smart Invoice?

All VAT-registered businesses in Zambia must use Smart Invoice-compliant systems. This includes businesses that issue tax invoices, credit notes, or debit notes. The requirement has been enforced since January 2025.

What happens if I don't use Smart Invoice?

Invoices not issued through a Smart Invoice-compliant system are invalid for input VAT deduction purposes. This means your customers cannot claim input VAT on purchases from you, making your business less competitive as a supplier.

Is Odoo Smart Invoice compliant?

Yes. Odoo ERP is natively Smart Invoice-compliant and is ZRA-accredited. M&J Consultants is Zambia's Official Certified Odoo Partner and can implement the full system including the Smart Invoice module.

How long does it take to become compliant?

For businesses already using accounting software, Smart Invoice integration typically takes 1-2 weeks. For businesses moving from manual invoicing to a full system like Odoo, implementation typically takes 4-8 weeks depending on complexity.

What are the ZRA-accredited Smart Invoice solutions?

ZRA-accredited solutions include Odoo, SAP, Sage, and ZRA's own VSDC (Virtual Sales Data Controller) software. Each solution must be registered with ZRA and meet their technical specifications for fiscal data transmission.
